The International Frontier Summit on Sustainable and Green Chemical Engineering (SGCE) 2024, jointly organised by the Engineered Science Society (ESS) and the School of Chemical Engineering at Xiangtan University, was held with great success at the Huayin International Hotel in Xiangtan, China, from 27 to 30 September 2024. The event brought together nearly 200 scientists and research engineers from across the world, specialising in fields such as chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, mechanical engineering, and physics. Attendees engaged in comprehensive discussions centred around five principal themes: "Carbon Neutrality and Low-Carbon Chemical Engineering," "Green Chemistry and Chemical Engineering," "Process Intensification and Simulation in Chemical Engineering," "Novel Catalytic Materials," and "Advanced Functional Materials." The summit featured a diverse array of presentations, including plenary addresses, keynote speeches, invited talks, oral presentations, and poster sessions. Through these varied formats, participants shared insights and debated the latest advancements, cutting-edge technologies, and innovative applications in green chemical engineering and sustainable energy materials. The Vice President of Xiangtan University, Professor Ge Fei, delivered the opening remarks.
The attending scholars included many esteemed and prominent Chinese professors and academics, as well as renowned scholars from countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Singapore, India, Kazakhstan, and Saudi Arabia.
During the conference, four eminent individuals were awarded the prestigious title of Life-time Fellow of the Engineered Science Society, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the field of engineered science. This honour was conferred based on the recommendation of current ESS Fellows and personal applications, followed by a rigorous evaluation by the review committee. The recipients included Professor Zhang Qiuyu (Northwestern Polytechnical University and Ministry of Education's Distinguished Changjiang Scholar), Professor Cao Dapeng (Beijing University of Chemical Technology and recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Fund), Professor Peng Wanxi (Henan Agricultural University and leader of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Plan"), and Professor Zhu Jianfeng (Shaanxi University of Science and Technology and leading figure in technological innovation).
To promote a broader and deeper understanding of emerging concepts and fields within engineered science, the summit also presented several prestigious awards. These included the Outstanding Contribution Award, Young Researcher Award, Best Poster Award, and Best Paper Award, acknowledging and encouraging the exceptional contributions of early-career and mid-career researchers in the field.
In addition, the ESS convened a journal development committee meeting during the summit, where comprehensive discussions were held on the strengths of the various ESS journals ("Engineered Science," "ES Energy & Environment," "ES Materials & Manufacturing," "ES Food & Agroforestry," "ES General," and "ES Chemistry and Sustainability") and the structure of their editorial boards. The committee reviewed the journals’ achievements to date, outlined future areas of focus, devised strategic plans for the continued development of the ESS, and proposed the establishment of a scientific advisory board. Further discussions were held regarding the future direction of the journals and corresponding adjustments to the editorial boards, thereby enhancing the society's platform for discourse in the field of engineered science.
The successful convening of this summit has accelerated the development of the Engineered Science Society, deepened the understanding of novel concepts in engineered science, and underscored the significant impact of emerging scientific fields on human progress.
